The right bankroll when raising limits.

Many players use the principle of the swimming bankroll in order to define table’s level (limits) for the game. For that reason the bankroll’s upper limit is defined, and when reaching it, the player changes the table to one with a higher limit. The bankroll’s lower limit is also established, when reaching it is indispensible to descend one level.
We’ll see a sample, how to count the limits and the limit exchange:
Let’s assume that you play on a limit of $10/$20 and you established the following sizes for the upper and lower limits of your bankroll: lower 350BB, upper 450BB. It is all clear with the lower one: when reaching the bankroll level of $7000 you’ll have to descend to a $5/$10 table. With the upper limit it’s all a little bit more difficult, so players don’t have to descend one level in case of losing; the upper level is established at one level higher. So, let’s count the limits for a level of $15/$30: the upper limit for this level is $13500, and the lower one $10500. Now, earning $13500 in a $10/$20 level, you can move into a $15/$30 level, and when descending until $10500, you have to move back to the $10/$20 level.
After winning big prizes one usually wants to move into a higher level; often that happens with tournament players. If you are sure that you can keep your win rate at a new level then you can try, that doesn’t have to increase too much the fluctuation range of your account.
Cash players should never jump into a new level, and when ascending, define exactly the losing sum after which you’ll have to move back. This number sum never should be higher than a 10% from your bankroll. Unplanned moves to higher levels can be done, if you can see there your favorite “fish” and you are sure, that you can win and keep a high win rate.
For tournament players the reason to move into higher levels can be tournaments with coverage of the prize founds, what sometimes happens in Poker Stars poker halls. The poker halls in this case pay itself part of pot, that is why the winning expectative increases. But anyway you should never play in tournaments with entering commission higher than 5% of your bankroll.
